Choosing The Right Fence For You

Are you in the market to either replace an existing fence or add a new fence to your home? If so, you probably have quite a few questions and you don't know where to begin! Franklin Fence and Deck is here to help and answer any questions you may have!

The first question associated with adding a fence to your home is .... Yep. You guessed it. Cost!

Cost. It is virtually impossible to give you a quote without looking at your home first! There are so many variables to consider: What material are you using? The total footage, height & picket space all play a factor in how much your fence will cost. Call Franklin Fence and Deck for a free estimate!

What type of fence should I choose? That is a question that we can't decide for you! You have to decide the look you're going for, how much you want to spend, how much maintenance you want to perform on it, etc. Aluminum fencing is designed to be aesthetically pleasing and a good alternative to the black wrought iron fence that everyone loves the look of! While a wrought iron fence is gorgeous, the continued maintenance to keep your fence up is not for everyone. Metal rusts... so keep that in mind if you're looking at an iron fence! With aluminum fencing from Franklin Fence and Deck, there is no maintenance! No sanding, priming, or painting. Just a beautiful fence that is virtually maintenance free!

A wood fence seems to be the cheapest route, right? Generally speaking, the initial cost of a wood fence IS cheaper, but think long term. Say, 10 years.

I have a steep backyard. Can I still use an aluminum fence? Of course! Franklin Fence and Deck specializes in aluminum fencing so we have answers to every "problem" you throw at us! We use the method called racking. In the rack method of fencing, specially designed fence panels are used to construct a fence that is visually appealing, secure and simple to install.

Decking Out Your House

Adding a deck to your home is a great investment; on average you will yield an approximate 87% return on your investment, depending on where you live and size of your deck, according to the 2014 Cost vs. Value Report from Remodeling Magazine.

Franklin Fence and Deck wants to make sure you have all the facts before deciding on which deck is right for you!

First things first. You need to hire a contractor. Generally speaking, it's a wise idea to hire a contractor who is experienced in deck construction. You don’t want to spend hundreds of dollars on supplies only to learn in a year or two that you installed the boards incorrectly, causing them to warp. A contractor is also abreast of all of the latest building code changes and can make sure your deck passes inspection.

Second, make sure you are comfortable with the size of your new deck! Bigger is not always better! Also, focus on the correct location. Your deck will be a popular place, so give careful thought to where it should be located. Begin by working out how to access it from the house. The ever-handy back door to the kitchen probably won’t do the job; it will force traffic toward the cooking area, making a shambles of any large-group entertaining. Instead, focus more on a place like the living room, dining room, or family room while being handy to the kitchen.

Finally, plan ahead! Perhaps you will want to add on as time goes on. Maybe you want to put in a hot tub? Planning this now could save you from tearing up what you have already installed!

Franklin Fence and Deck would love to be a part of your new outdoor living space! Give us a call today at 615-790-8428 and let us help you plan your dream deck today!

Fence Materials Guide

Fencing in a property can be one of the wisest decisions a homeowner can make for their home. A fence not only looks great and has fantastic utility (keeping pets in and unwanted visitors out), but it also increases the value of your home. Adding a fence to your home is a great all-around decision.

However, sometimes homeowners stumble a bit in the initial stages because there are lots of issues that need to be addressed and the task can seem daunting. One of the biggest stumbling blocks is choosing the right fence material for your home. Luckily, Franklin Fence and Deck is here to help.

There are THREE elements you need to consider in your material selection:

  1. Maintenance
  2. Look
  3. Price
Maintenance is incredibly important to consider. There are two prices for your fence, the initial cost (installation and project cost) and then the cost over time (repairs, repainting, etc.). When it comes to keeping your fence free from damage and looking nice, certain materials are better than others. For example, aluminum is one of the least labor-intensive fence materials available. You can set it up the way you want and not have to worry about it for years. Vinyl is also one of the easier materials to maintain. Wrought iron tends to be harder to maintain than aluminum and wood fences exceed all types of fencing for its maintenance needs. Each material has a virtue or vice in maintenance and it’s important to understand the type of maintenance that will be required with the material you choose.

Look is subjective but can be one of the most important factors to consider!

Price must always be considered (Both initial price and maintenance price)! For instance, while aluminum is not the cheapest material to use for a fence, it does not require much maintenance, meaning it will actually save you not only money but time as well in the long run. On the other hand, wood is one of the cheapest materials to use initially, but its high maintenance requirements end up costing more money. Do you want to spend less up front and more later? Or viceversa?
